How do I compare a painting with the view today?
Open the Map tab, tap a pin to open a painting, then double-tap the image to flip between the historical painting and a present-day photograph of the same location.
Do I need an account?
No. Plein Air has no sign-in and works fully offline. Everything is available the moment you open the app.
Does the app use my location?
No. The app never requests or accesses your location. Maps show where paintings were made, not where you are.
Where does the content come from?
Paintings are public-domain works. Present-day comparison photographs come from Wikimedia Commons under their respective free licenses, with attribution shown in the app.
Is my data collected?
No. Plein Air collects no personal data at all. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Will you add more painters and places?
Yes — the catalog grows over time. If there's a painter, painting, or location you'd love to see, email us; suggestions are welcome.
